After installing the Cookiebot for Shopify app, you need to activate the consent banner in your Shopify theme before it will appear on your store. This is a quick one-time setup.
Step-by-step activation
- Open the Cookiebot CMP app in your Shopify admin.
- On the Dashboard, find the Activate Banner card and click Open theme editor. Your Shopify theme editor will open automatically.
- In the theme editor, click App embeds in the left-hand menu.
- Find Cookiebot CMP in the list and toggle it ON.
- Click Save in the top-right corner of the theme editor.
- Return to the Cookiebot app and click Check Activation Status to confirm the banner is live.
Note
After saving, it can take 15–30 minutes for changes to appear on your live store. Clear your browser cache if the banner does not show immediately.
The banner is not appearing — what should I check?
- Make sure you clicked Save in the theme editor after toggling the app embed on.
- Clear your browser cache or test in an incognito/private window.
- Confirm the app embed is enabled in the correct theme (your live/published theme, not a draft).
- Check that the Banner Status toggle inside the Cookiebot app dashboard is set to ON.
Switching themes
If you change your Shopify theme after setting up the app, you will need to re-enable the Cookiebot CMP app embed in the new theme. The toggle is stored per theme, not globally.
Scanning and managing your services
After activation, the app performs an automated cookie scan. Scan duration varies based on site complexity. You can monitor progress on the Services page, which shows the current status (Done, In Progress, or Failed) and the Last scan timestamp.
Note
Scans are manual after the initial setup. If you add new apps or third-party scripts to your Shopify store, return to the Services page and click Start Scan to detect them.
For each service identified in the Your Services card, you can:
- Change Category: Services receive suggested categories (Marketing, Statistics, etc.). You can modify the category via the dropdown — blocking relies on these category assignments.
- Ignore Service: Check the checkbox next to a service to exclude it from the consent banner display.
- Delete Service: Remove a service from the list entirely.
A search bar is available to locate specific services by name.
How cookie blocking works
The Cookiebot for Shopify app does not perform blocking directly. Instead, Shopify manages the blocking based on the categories you assign to each service:
- A visitor lands on your site and sees the consent banner.
- The visitor makes their choice — for example, accepting Statistics but rejecting Marketing.
- The app communicates this consent decision to Shopify.
- Shopify blocks all services and apps you have categorised as "Marketing" from running or loading.
Note
The Autoblocker feature adds an additional layer of protection. It automatically pauses marketing and analytics scripts until the visitor has given appropriate consent, reducing the risk of scripts firing before consent is applied.
Important
In some cases, third-party scripts may run briefly before consent is applied, depending on how they are implemented. The Autoblocker significantly reduces this risk but cannot guarantee complete prevention in every scenario.
