The Cookiebot for Shopify app supports multiple languages depending on your plan. You can set the default display language for your consent banner directly inside the app.
How language display works
The CMP does not automatically detect the visitor's browser language or device language. The banner always displays in the default language selected in your app dashboard, regardless of the visitor's browser or location settings.
If you have added multiple languages to your plan, visitors can switch the banner language themselves by pressing the globe icon on the consent banner. The globe icon only appears when more than one language is configured in the app.
Note
To offer language choice to your visitors, add the languages you want to support in the app settings. Visitors will then see the globe icon and can select their preferred language manually.
Language support by plan
- Free: 1 language (your choice)
- Essential: 2 languages
- Pro: Up to 60 languages
How to add a language
- Open the Cookiebot CMP app in your Shopify admin.
- Navigate to the Languages tab.
- In the Active Languages card, click Add Language.
- Select your desired language from the list.
Note
If you are on the Free plan, a popup will appear when you try to add a second language, offering two options: replace your current language with the new one, or upgrade your plan to add a second language.
Managing active languages
Each language in your Active Languages list has two management options on its card:
- Set as default: Click Set as default to make that language the primary banner language shown to all visitors.
- Remove: Click Remove to delete the language from your active list.
How to set the default language
- Open the Cookiebot CMP app in your Shopify admin.
- Navigate to the Languages tab.
- Find the language you want to set as default and click Set as default on its card.
- Click Save.
Note
The app updates automatically — no manual Shopify theme update is required after saving your language settings. If the banner still shows in the old language after saving, clear your browser cache and try an incognito window.
The language is not changing — troubleshooting
- Make sure you clicked Save after selecting the new language.
- Clear your browser cache or test in a private/incognito window to rule out cached content.
- If the banner still appears in the wrong language after saving: try selecting the language again, save, then reload your storefront.
Important
If you are on the Free plan and want to display the banner in a non-English language, you need to set this manually in the language settings. The Free plan supports any single language of your choice.
